Saturday Update

Moviegoers were in the mood for star-driven holiday humor on Friday as the new Vince Vaughn-Reese Witherspoon comedy Four Christmases led the North American box office with an estimated $13M in its third day of release pushing its total to $28M since opening on Wednesday. The Warner Bros. release now has a clear shot of winning the Thanksgiving weekend race with a stellar debut. Generally, movies over the turkey frame gross about 40% of their Friday-to-Sunday takes on Friday since most everyone has the day off. Four Christmases should follow that pattern and collect $30-33M over the three-day weekend period and $45-48M across the extended Wednesday-to-Sunday span.

Two other new releases hit theaters this weekend but their combined sales couldn't match the Vince-and-Reese hit. Fox's big-budget extravaganza Australia took in an estimated $5.8M on Friday giving the Nicole Kidman-Hugh Jackman tale $11M in its first three days. The Friday-to-Sunday gross may reach $14-16M putting the five-day tally at $19-21M.

Lionsgate released the action sequel Transporter 3 and banked an estimated $4.8M on Friday giving Jason Statham a similar $11M in its first three days. Look for $11-14M over the weekend and $17-20M across five days.

A battle is brewing for second place between last weekend's openers Twilight and Bolt. Each film grossed an estimated $11M on Friday representing a steep 69% tumble from last Friday for the vampire flick, but a huge 57% increase for the animated canine pic. Last Friday, Twilight dominated the multiplexes so a large decline was expected and with parents and kids both free all day Disney's new toon had more of an available audience. But which will win the silver medal? Kidpics typically see a larger share of the weekend take on Black Friday, often 42%. Look for both films to capture $25-28M over the Friday-to-Sunday period with Summit's Twilight possibly having an edge and boosting its ten-day cume to $120M.

Sony's Quantum of Solace grossed an estimated $8.3M on Friday, slipping just 2% from a week ago, and may target $19-21M for the weekend. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa surged 54% from last Friday to an estimated $5.7M and is on course to find $13-15M for the Friday-to-Sunday period. Universal's hit comedy Role Models took in an estimated $2.1M on Friday, off 12% from last Friday, and is heading for $5-6M over the frame.

Be sure to check the chart of the top-grossing Thanksgiving weekend films.

Check back on Sunday for the full weekend box office report.
