Blu-ray Review: Planes: Fire & Rescue

Opinions on revenue potential can drastically change the life of a film's release to the public. Disney developed the animated film Planes as content to fill its ongoing need for home entertainment products, but a shift in strategy put the movie into a more costly theatrical release instead. The move paid off as it grossed over $90M in North America in late summer 2013 when it had no toons opening against it for nearly two months. The inevitable sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue opened this past July and did about one-third less which still made it a success. It has now arrived on Blu-ray.

Creatively, the second installment in this series is a better film than its predecessor. Not by much, but still better. It remains intended mostly for younger children of single-digit age and the running time is kept near the 90-minute mark which is common for this type of film. Dane Cook still leads the way voicing Dusty and the raunchy comic does well in tame PG-rated fare. But added here is a bit of sentiment that reminds kids of how brave firefighters are, even the ones who do it from the sky. This is a good title for smaller children who have not yet moved on to more sophisticated humor.

An ample amount of bonus features prove to be satisfying, though not thrilling. Disney shorts are fun and this disc includes "Vitaminamulch: Air Spectacular" which will not be remembered as one of the better mini-stories to come from the Mouse House. But for four-year-olds, it should play just fine. Some featurettes, deleted scenes and a music video also are added in.
