Oscar Comments
"In the tense Best Actor category, I think Matt Damon should win, but Nicholson should nudge out Fonda and Duvall by half a %."

"I don't think the best actor contest is between Robert Duvall and Jack Nicholson, I think it is between Peter Fonda and Jack. I am even willing to say that Peter Fonda will win, because the Academy Awards don't seem to like Jack's arrogance (everybody thought he would win for A Few Good Men but he didn't). I personally hope he wins for I loved him in As Good As It Gets and I think he deserves an Oscar. I very much doubt Gloria Stuart will win for her performance was excellent but not out of this world, they might strongly consider her but because of her age but she will not win. Last but not least I hope that Robin Williams wins but I also doubt it because critics have been going nuts over Burt Reynolds and I think he will win because of the politics involved in the Oscars. It is part of his comeback and to solidify that the studio that produced the film will ensure he wins. Personally my heart is with Robin but my mind tells me Burt."

"In my opinion, I think both L.A. Confidential and Boogie Nights should get more Oscars then they will eventually end up getting!! L.A. Confidential should get it for the Best Picture and also for Best Editing award. Besides, getting one for the Adapted Screenplay. Julianne Moore should get it for the Best Supporting Actress. I found her role to be very convincing and moving."

"Just a quick note to say that Helen Hunt received her Best Actress Golden Globe for a comedy not drama and since she is now lumped in with all the other actressess in the Oscar category I doubt that she will win."

"You seem to be right on the money, but I think that you are way off for the supporting categories. The academy tends to award real acting here, and save the life time awards for the main acting categories. If it's going to be a Basinger, Reynolds night, then it will be a long shot that will come out of nowhere. Don't you see the trend? Gloria Stuart has very little chance, and Williams, though he has a little more of a chance, won't get it."

"I agree hands down with you on your votes. I guess great minds think alike."

"No doubt, 1997 wasn't the best year in movie history. Sure, Titanic is making waves equal to the original ship, but does it really deserve 14 Oscar Nominations? Granted, it is one of the top five films of the year, but not the best. Besides L.A. Confidential, the other best picture nominees are loveable hug fest cry pleasers that don't belong in contention for such a billing (excluding the very funny and very down to earth "The Full Monty.") Actors who should not have been nominated include: Matt Damon and Dustin Hoffman. Since everybody saw their movies, other more deserving contenders were left in the cold (Philip Baker Hall-Hard Eight and Mark Wahlberg for Boogie Nights). Other contenders who never should have been nominated: Helen Hunt, Julie Christie, and Gloria Stuart. Gloria's contribution to film decades ago, should and will be recognized. Giving her the Oscar out of sympathy isn't fair to others in contention. Her work in Titanic was wonderful, but the amount of time she spent on screen should have been classified as less than a supporting role. Everything that was looked over by the Academy: P.T. Anderson and his two wonderful films (Hard Eight and Boogie Nights), Quentin Tarantino, In The Company of Men, Eve's Bayou, and Donnie Brasco."

"I couldn't find words to say how much I loved Titanic. It's very great movie, almost the best. I just want to say Kate Winslet was pretty good in Titanic."

"The Best Picture award will go to L.A. Confidential because Titanic was too melodramatic but James Cameron will win for Best Director because of the sheer magnitude of the film. Peter Fonda will pick up the Best Actor award, for Duval and Nicholson have already won. Helen Hunt will win because she made some money for Hollywood back in 1996 with Twister. Kim Basinger will win just so her movie can get some recognition, that is why L.A. Confidential will also win for Best Adapted Screenplay. Suppporting Actor will go to Robin Williams for all he has done for Hollywood. Original Screenplay will go to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon because, well, for obvious reasons."

"Four hours of stars trying to be funny.... Lets see, Oscars or Biagraphy on the Spunge? The Full Monty will win best picture. Ya! and I saw Bill Gates living in a cardboard box. Damm, Leonardo Dicaprio's not really dead!"

"With its rather hyperbolic title, As Good As It Gets is merely okay. I found myself liking the Nicholson character, while disliking the Hunt character. I blame this mostly on Hunt, who turned in a rather mediocre performance. I am ashamed that the Academy even nominated her. And if the Academy gives the two main acting awards to both leads in that film, I will lose much of my admiration for the Academy. Every actress besides Hunt deserves to be nominated, and I would not mind if Kate Winslet won. However, Judi Dench deserves the award, as her performance is the strongest of all those nominated. If, and when, Hunt wins, no other award will be able to make me appreciate the Oscars. Even if Titanic wins Best Picture, I will still have the memory that they also gave Hunt the award. I will be greatly distressed. Let's hope and pray that this overrated film doesn't get the awards!"

"I really believe that you are wrong about Burt. I do think he will walk away with an oscar for a film that was basically snubbed by the academy for its final shall we say "risque" scene. This will be its way of awarding this fine film with an oscar. If he doesnt get it then i agree Robin Williams will win even though his performance in Dead Poets Society is his best."

"IMHO Duvall will win for his $5 million movie The Apostle, which he himself directed and starred giving an extraordinary performance. In comparison Jack Nicholson only offers a pastiche of his familiar acting tricks. He performed quite well but not oscarworthy. I don't agree with you saying Nicholson will win cause he's a flashy person or because all members of the academy have seen this film. (cfr Jessica Lange winning for Blue Sky).
Cinematographically speaking Cameron should win for best director for the enormous achievement of making a 3 hour 15 minute movie with a terrible cliché/simplistic lovestory seem only a 2 hour movie. On the other hand, this is certainly not the best picture of 1997. The biggest, but not the best. ( I think in comparing one phenomenon to another that ET was a far better and more fully accomplished movie than Titanic and it didn't win Best Picture)."
