4DX Review - John Wick: Chapter 3

Growing at the box office with every installment (yes, there is a fourth chapter already in development), the John Wick series has gained in popularity by giving the people what they want. In a movie world dominated by super hero films or PG-13 spy franchises, there has been an opening for ultraviolent R-rated action films and Keanu Reeves has been taking advantage of that. His latest assassin thriller John Wick: Chapter 3 delivers the brutal intensity that fans have come to expect, and then some. The story follows up on the end of Chapter Two which found Wick kicked out of his elite organization and having a bounty on his head which every assassin in the world comes to collect. The hunter has become the hunted and must prepare for war.

Action movies are well-designed to take advantage of the 4DX format, especially violent R-rated flicks. Moving seats take the moviegoer more into the experience with ups, downs, shaking, and my personal favorite, being hit in the back during intense moments. Air blasts simulate gunfire, water scenes feature a spray in the face, lightning can light up the walls, and even smells are sometimes pumped in. Some movie fans would find this disruptive, but plenty of die-hard entertainment addicts will get their money's worth at this 4DX premium showing.

Chase scenes allow the format to shine with all the movements that are forced upon you, almost like an amusement park ride. The water spray can get annoying, but luckily the seats give the user an option to turn it off. Any food like popcorn needs to be held tightly as the seat can angle downward allowing any tray sitting on a lap to slide right off.

John Wick: Chapter 3 succeeds in providing brutal action scenes and stunts and often plays as an infomercial on guns and ammo. It will always be known as the film which kicked Avengers: Endgame out of the number one spot with its huge $56.8M opening weekend which is among the ten best of all-time for R-rated action movies. The pricing for 4DX is high, $26 per ticket in New York City, but as a unique experience, the premium format plays well for special occasions for the most beloved assassin today.
