Blu-ray Review - John Wick: Chapter 3
Growing at the box office with every installment (yes, there is a fourth chapter already in development), the John Wick series has gained in popularity by giving the people what they want. In a movie world dominated by super hero films or PG-13 spy franchises, there has been an opening for ultraviolent R-rated action films and Keanu Reeves has been taking advantage of that.
His latest assassin thriller John Wick: Chapter 3 delivers the brutal intensity that fans have come to expect, and then some. The story follows up on the very end of Chapter Two which found Wick kicked out of his elite organization and having a bounty on his head which every assassin in the world comes to collect. The hunter has become the hunted and must prepare for war. With $171M domestic, it was the top-grossing R-rated film of the summer and among the top ten overall. Global is at $322M and counting.
John Wick: Chapter 3 succeeds in providing brutal action scenes and stunts and often plays as an infomercial on guns and ammo. It will always be known as the film which kicked Avengers: Endgame out of the number one spot with its huge $56.8M opening weekend which is among the ten best of all-time for R-rated action movies.
On blu-ray, this title has several behind-the-scenes featurettes which give fans an in-depth look at the many sides of the making of the film. Some focus on the stunts, others on locations, actor (and dog) training, and even weapons. The disc provides an ample amount of BTS footage and interviews with almost everyone in the cast and crew.
Die-hard fans will want to see these. The two theatrical trailers are interesting to watch, from a marketing perspective. And the items for the video game are less useful. But overall, this is a worthwhile blu-ray for fans of the most beloved assassin today.
