Saturday Update
Diapers are in fashion this weekend as Paramount's The Rugrats Movie led all films on Friday with an impressive $6.73M opening day gross. Family films tend to make about one quarter of their total weekend business on Fridays and if Rugrats follows the same path, it could explode with a $25-28M debut weekend gross.
Will Smith also attracted a wide audience as his latest film Enemy of the State launched with a $6.36M tally on Friday, its opening day. The Buena Vista hit seems on course for a Friday-to-Sunday debut of about $19-21M.
Landing in roughly 500 theaters this weekend was Woody Allen's Celebrity. With $515,000 on Friday, the Miramax title should earn $1.5-2M for the weekend frame.
Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 36% for The Waterboy, 44% for Meet Joe Black, an alarming 63% for I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and 36% for I'll Be Home For Christmas.
Be sure to check in on Sunday for the full weekend box office report based on studio estimates.
