Paranormal Activity 2 Update

Paramount's horror sequel Paranormal Activity 2 got off to a spectacular start on Thursday night as post-midnight shows starting at 12:01am pulled in a record $6.3M. It was the highest amount ever collect by an R-rated film from a midnight debut beating the super hero actioner Watchmen from March 2009 which went on to an opening weekend tally of $55.2M.

Activity is set up for what should be a sensational debut weekend of more than $30M. The first film began as a midnight-show-only phenomenon so the follow-up naturally generated plenty of excitement with fans wanting to see the first show at the creepy hour again. Though the midnight gross beat Watchmen, the entire Friday-to-Sunday haul is not necessarily on course to reach the same level. The full Friday opening day take will give a better indication of what the weekend potential will be. Reviews have been good and almost even with the strong critical response that the first pic saw a year ago.

The biggest of the Saw films opened in the low $30M range and also carried R ratings during October's pre-Halloween corridor. The new demons-in-the-house pic should now be able to debut better than any installment from that franchise. The seventh and supposedly final film, Saw 3D, opens next Friday although it was originally scheduled to open today. With both horror sequels slotted on the same day, Lionsgate wisely moved its older property back a week.
