Saturday Update
| Sony raced into first place with its new teen sex comedy
Superbad which powered its way to an
opening day gross of $12M, according to estimates. The tally was even higher
than producer Judd Apatow's last film Knocked
Up (his directorial effort) which opened to $9.9M on its way
to a $30.7M debut weekend. Since teen movies typically see more of their
weekend business on Friday, Superbad
might find its way to a similar $29-32M.
Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig saw an estimated $2M on Friday for the opening day of their new sci-fi thriller The Invasion. A three-day take of $5-6M seems likely for Warner Bros. The historical epic The Last Legion bowed to just under $1M on Friday, its first day of release, and should find its way to $2-3M for the weekend. Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 65% for Rush Hour 3, 46% for The Bourne Ultimatum, and 49% for The Simpsons Movie. For a NEW review of The Invasion visit The Chief Report. Be sure to check back on Sunday for a complete wrapup of the weekend box office. |
