Saturday Update

Sony topped the box office on Friday with the opening of the action thriller S.W.A.T. which grossed an estimated $13.5M in its first day of release. The Samuel L. Jackson-Colin Farrell pic should arrest $38-42M over the three-day weekend session.

Another stong debut came from Disney's body-switching comedy Freaky Friday which took in an estimated $7.9M on Friday, its third day of release. Jamie Lee Curtis' family film looks to collect $22-25M over the Friday-to-Sunday frame making its five-day launch $33-36M.

Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 60% for American Wedding, 30% for Pirates of the Caribbean, 35% for Seabiscuit, and a horrendous 86% for Gigli.

Be sure to check back on Sunday for the complete weekend box office report featuring official studio estimates.
