Saturday Update
| Fox rocked the box office on Friday with an explosive launch
for the highly anticipated animated comedy The
Simpsons Movie which beat all expectations to open to an estimated
$29.4M on Friday, its first day of release. That put Comic Book Guy, Disco
Stu, and the rest of Springfield's finest at the top of the list of this
year's biggest non-sequel opening days. March's Spartan blockbuster 300
bowed to $28.1M on a Friday while Transformers
opened to $27.9M on a Tuesday earlier this month. With a massive built-in
fan base, The Simpsons Movie should
see its Friday account for a large share of the final weekend tally so
a three-day gross of $70-75M seems possible.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslin cooked up an estimated $4M opening day for their new film No Reservations. The Warner Bros. title should gross $11-12M for the weekend. Lindsay Lohan's new horror film I Know Who Killed Me bowed to an estimated $1.3M for Sony and looks to find its way to $3-4M for the weekend. Fellow freshman Who's Your Caddy grossed just under $1M on Friday according to estimates and will make $2-3M for the three-day period for MGM. Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 51% for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, 52% for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and 53% for Hairspray.
