Saturday Update

The heavily-hyped summer sequels Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs continued to lead the box office on Friday with estimated grosses of $18M and $17M, respectively. Optimus Prime and pals climbed 57% from Thursday and raised the spectacular cume to $268.9M allowing the Michael Bay smash to jump up to number 38 on the list of the Top 50 All-Time Domestic Blockbusters after the $279.2M of 2004's Meet the Fockers. Transformers also flew past Up to become the top-grossing film of 2009 after only ten days of release. For the Friday-to-Sunday period, look for a take of $43-47M with the cume rocketing past $295M in a mere 12 days.

With Friday being a day off for many, grosses were pumped up across the board. Saturday sales are expected to dip since Fourth of July outdoor activities will keep many away from the multiplexes. Sunday should be strong though.

Fox's newest Ice Age installment rose 53% from Thursday and put its three-day total at $41.9M. The Friday-to-Sunday tally may end up with $42-46M for a five-day debut of $67-71M. The animated 3D pic will still pose a challenge for the top spot for the weekend. Over its first five days, the film will do what its predecessor Ice Age: The Meltdown opened to in just three days ($68M).

Johnny Depp and Christian Bale held steady in third place with the gangster drama Public Enemies which grossed an estimated $10M on Friday, also its third day in cinemas. Rising 50% from Thursday, the Universal title has taken in $24.8M in its first three days with the Friday-to-Sunday figure heading to $24-26M. The five-day tally should end up in the area of $40M.
