Saturday Update

Universal and Marvel got off to a rock solid start with their new comic book flick The Incredible Hulk which debuted to an estimated $21M on Friday in its first day of release. The Edward Norton pic did not live up to the $24.9M opening day tally of 2003's Eric Bana-starrer The Hulk, however the new reboot was never expected to reach that level. For the weekend, The Incredible Hulk should top the charts with a $53-57M premiere weekend giving Universal its biggest debut in ten months.

M. Night Shyamalan's new eco-thriller The Happening bowed better than expected with an estimated $13M on Friday the 13th. That was well above the $6.9M first-day gross of his last film Lady in the Water in July 2006 but behind the $20.8M opening Friday of his previous effort The Village from July 2004.

Horror pictures opening on a Friday the 13th typically attract an extraordinarily large share of their weekend business on the first day such as 2004's Alien vs. Predator with 45% and 2006's The Grudge 2 with 48%. The Happening could perform in a similar way and reach $28-31M over the Friday-to-Sunday period.

Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 50% for Kung Fu Panda and 63% for You Don't Mess With the Zohan.
