Saturday Update
A trio of new releases failed to unseat the top three blockbusters on Friday which plan to spend the weekend playing musical chairs atop the charts. The Adam Sandler comedy The Longest Yard fell 42% from its opening day to collect an estimated $9.1M on Friday. Paramount's prison pic looks to capture $28-30M over the three-day frame.
DreamWorks took in an estimated $8.5M for its animated comedy Madagascar which dropped only 41% from its opening day last Friday. The PG-rated toon could make a challenge for the number one spot for the weekend with a three-day tally of $29-32M. Dropping 53% from last Friday was Star Wars Episode III with an estimated $7.3M and is on course to take in $24-26M.
Among the freshmen, the Russell Crowe boxing tale Cinderella Man hit hardest with an estimated $6.1M in its first day of release. Universal's Ron Howard-directed drama should punch up $19-22M for the entire weekend.
Warner Bros. took in an estimated $3.8M for its teen girl pic Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants which bowed on Wednesday. The skater drama Lords of Dogtown grossed an estimated $2.7M for Sony in its first day. Look for Friday-to-Sunday grosses of $10-12M for Sisterhood and $7-8M for Dogtown.
