Sunday Update

Disney pulled in an estimated $38.2M for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End on Saturday, its second full day of release, dipping 11% from Friday. The studio reported an official Thursday-to-Sunday weekend estimate of $126.5M. Playing at a record 4,362 theaters, the Johnny Depp sequel averaged a stunning $29,011 per location over three and a half days. The Mouse House will report its official four-day estimate for the long Memorial Day holiday weekend on Monday.

Based on how films perform over this particular holiday frame, the new Pirates chapter should find itself with a gross over four and a half days similar to the $151.1M that Spider-Man 3 opened to in its first three days earlier this month. That would be north of $130M over the Friday-to-Monday span and enough to break the opening record for the Memorial Day holiday of $122.9M over four days that X-Men: The Last Stand generated a year ago.

At World's End's corresponding Friday-to-Sunday debut without sales from Thursday's early 8pm shows would be roughly $112.5M putting it at number five on the list of all-time biggest opening weekends. Topping it are Spider-Man 3, Dead Man's Chest ($135.6M), Shrek the Third ($121.6M), and the first Spider-Man ($114.8M).

Overseas, Disney is estimating that Pirates will gross a colossal $205.5M by end of business Sunday giving the film a worldwide opening of $332M from the first debuts on Wednesday through Sunday sales in all territories.

Still pulling in business in second place in its second weekend was Shrek the Third which grossed $20.4M on Saturday, according to official data from its distributor Paramount. The studio is estimating a three-day tally of $51M and a four-day haul of $65.3M which would push the cume to $215.7M. That would represent a sharp decline of 58% over the three-day period from its opening haul of $121.6M. Competition from Pirates looks to have been a factor as has less-than-stellar reactions from moviegoers.

Sony's third Spidey flick took in an estimated $5.3M on Saturday, according to data released by the studio. The webslinger is estimated to gross $13.7M over three days (down 53%) pushing its domestic haul to $303.3M making it the year's first film to join the triple-century club. Over four days, Sony estimates a $17.5M take. The Venom adventure also crossed the $800M mark worldwide and will soon be the top-grossing Spider-Man film globally.

Lionsgate debuted its new Ashley Judd horror film Bug and grossed an estimated $3.3M over the Friday-to-Sunday period, according to official studio data. Playing in 1,661 locations, the R-rated thriller averaged a poor $1,963 per theater.
