Saturday Update
| Perseus conquered the North American box office on Friday
as the not-so-true-3D pic Clash of the Titans
powered its way to number one opening to an estimated $26.4M on Friday,
its first full day of release. Adding in grosses from Thursday night's
advance showtimes between 8pm and midnight the total stands at $29M thus
far. The Good Friday holiday typically accounts for about 40% of the three-day
Easter weekend takes for films since many people, especially students,
have the day off.
Titans scored the second biggest opening day ever in the month of April trailing only the $30.6M of Fast & Furious from this very weekend last year. For the full weekend period including Thursday night, Warner Bros. should collect $63-67M from Clash of the Titans. Tyler Perry struck gold yet again with his latest pic Why Did I Get Married Too? which bowed in second place with an estimated $12.3M on Friday ahead of what should be a $28-31M opening weekend for Lionsgate. The DreamWorks 3D toon How to Train Your Dragon dropped to third with an estimated $11.1M for a mild 9% dip from last Friday. Having schools closed certainly helped. Look for $27-29M over the weekend. Miley Cyrus debuted in fourth place with her non-Hannah venture The Last Song which grossed an estimated $7.1M on Friday in its third day of play. The teen romance should take in roughly $18M over the weekend and $26-28M over five days. Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 39% for Alice in Wonderland, 40% for Hot Tub Time Machine, and only 18% for Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
