Saturday Update

A trio of new releases could not defeat the mighty war epic 300 at the North American box office on Friday. The Warner Bros. hit grossed an estimated $10.2M falling 64% from its opening day last week. Though steep, the decline was understandable since last Friday's tally included the first midnight shows from Thursday night which were mostly sell-outs across the country. Saturday and Sunday declines should not be as large, but could still be over 50% which is normal for a film like 300 that carried so much anticipation with it into the marketplace. For the Friday-to-Sunday period, a gross of $32-35M may result. The Spartan battle pic also smashed through the $100M mark on Friday in only its eighth day of release.

Sandra Bullock enjoyed the best opening day among the new titles with the thriller Premonition which premiered with an estimated $6.4M. The Sony release looks to scare up $17-19M for the frame which would make it her biggest opening weekend ever.

Universal's horror film Dead Silence bowed to an estimated $2.9M while Fox Searchlight's new Chris Rock comedy I Think I Love My Wife debuted with an estimated $1.8M. Final weekend grosses should reach roughly $8M for Dead and $5M for Wife.

Among holdovers, Friday-to-Friday declines were 29% for Wild Hogs, 14% for Bridge to Terabithia, and 35% for Ghost Rider.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $31.9M on Friday which was up 16% from a year ago when V for Vendetta opened at number one with $8.8M on its way to a weekend tally of $25.6M.

Be sure to check back on Sunday night for the complete weekend box office report with official studio estimates.
